Austria’s #2 civilian airport 3 km from Mozart’s city: trolleybuses instead of rail, classic 100 ml security, winter ski banks that punch above the building size, and a single ~25-seat Business Lounge by Gate 10 that closes early some evenings.
An editorial 0–10 score. The overall is exactly the weighted sum of six traveler categories — not a Google rating and not a poll.

Most important tips
A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.
Compact campus, serious winter-Saturday peaks — pad security and do not treat SZG like a sleepy regional field in ski season.
SZG is larger than Innsbruck but still compresses hard when UK/DE/NL ski charters bank on winter Saturdays and holiday weeks. Terminal 2 absorbs overflow check-in and ski bags, yet security and the shared airside hold remain the bottlenecks. Build more buffer than the short walk distances imply. Summer leisure peaks are milder but still watch early Eurowings / Ryanair / easyJet turns. Alpine weather and a single runway can ripple delays even when the terminal looks calm.
One campus, two buildings — learn T1 first; T2 is the winter/overflow relief valve, not a separate airport.
Terminal 1 is the year-round spine: landside check-in, security, airside gates, retail/food, Business Lounge near Gate 10. Terminal 2 opens for seasonal peaks with extra desks, gates, and ski-equipment check-in. Apron walks and bus boarding are normal in any weather. Re-check FIDS for Schengen vs non-Schengen holds after the commercial zone. Meeting point: landside arrivals after reclaim in T1.
Fine for coffee and schnitzel; Business Lounge or the city beat the gate scrum on peak winter banks.
Expect Marktrestaurant, Marktcafe, Das Wolfgang, and a short airside snack/duty-free mix rather than a food hall. The Business Lounge (~25 seats) is the only calm sit-down with complimentary food and drinks if you hold Priority Pass, eligible airline access, or pay €45. On packed ski Saturdays the lounge fills fast — a city meal via Obus 2/10 often beats fighting for airside seats if your schedule allows.
No rail at SZG — Obus 2/10 into Salzburg (from €2.50 Kernzone advance single) is the default public move; buy before you board.
Catch trolleybus 2 toward Hauptbahnhof (~23 min) or 10 toward the centre (~15 min, Mon–Sat). Official 2026 Kernzone Einzelfahrt €2.50 adult in advance / 24h-Ticket €5.20; buy at the stop machine, Salzburg Verkehr channels, or Trafik before boarding. Taxi is convenient with ski bags; centre often ~€15–25 metered depending on traffic/time. Pre-book parking for winter weekends; Kiss & Fly is free only for the first 10 minutes then €4.70 per started 10 minutes (airport tariff page from 1 Dec 2025).

Salzburg Airport and the Salzburg city center
4 ways into the city, compared on time, cost, and luggage.
1 lounge with access rules, hours, and verdicts. 1 rated worth it.
Obus 2 / 10 are your rail head. There is no station at SZG. Line 2 runs to Hauptbahnhof in about 23 minutes (typically every 15–20 minutes; Sundays/holidays often every 20). Line 10 (Mon–Sat) reaches the city centre in about 15 minutes. Official Salzburg AG / SVV 2026 Kernzone Einzelfahrt €2.50 adult in advance (5-pack), Stundenkarte €2.60, 24-Stundenkarte €5.20. Buy before boarding — Obus lines generally will not sell the cheaper on-board reduced tickets.
6 rated amenities — food, Wi-Fi, quiet spots, family, and sleep.
Where to refill for free, and where a bottle costs the least airside.

Salzburg Airport and the Salzburg city center
Compare prepaid private transfers to Salzburg — useful overnight, with luggage, or when you want a locked-in fare before you land.
Trolleybus from the terminal curb to Salzburg Hbf (~23 min).
Tip: Official 2026 Kernzone Einzelfahrt €2.50 adult advance (5-pack) / Stundenkarte €2.60 / 24-Stundenkarte €5.20. Buy before boarding.
Mon–Sat trolleybus toward the Altstadt / centre (~15 min).
Tip: Same Kernzone tickets as line 2. Typically every ~15 min daytime; does not replace line 2 on Sundays — check live SVV boards.
Metered taxis outside arrivals — convenient with ski luggage to city hotels.
Tip: Centre commonly ~€15–25 depending on traffic/time — confirm meter/destination before loading on peak Saturdays.
Airport car parks about a 5-minute walk from the terminal; online rates undercut drive-up.
Tip: Kiss & Fly: first 10 minutes free, then €4.70 per started 10 minutes (tariff from 1 Dec 2025). Pre-book winter weekends.
SZG’s only passenger lounge — compact ~80 m² / ~25-seat room with snacks, soft drinks, standard alcohol, Wi-Fi, two work desks, press, and flight screens. Worth it with a network card or when gates are packed; skip if the desk is already at capacity, your departure is after posted close, or you are already late for a bus-gate call. No showers.

Add a photoOnly passenger lounge — T1 ground floor near Gate 10; ~80 m² / ~25 seats; posted hours Mon/Sat/Sun 05:00–19:00, Tue/Wed to 20:00, Thu/Fri to 21:00; walk-up €45 / Priority Pass / listed airline Business; no showers.
Trolleybus 2 to Hauptbahnhof (~23 min) and 10 to the centre (~15 min Mon–Sat). Official 2026 Kernzone Einzelfahrt €2.50 adult advance / 24h-Ticket €5.20; buy before boarding.
Free Wi-Fi across public terminal areas via the on-site splash page / SSID.
Solid landside/airside café and restaurant mix for a mid-size alpine airport — not a food hall; lounge is the calm sit-down on peak Saturdays.
Request through your airline; landside meet points on the compact two-building campus.
Major rental brands on campus; pre-book winter ski weeks.
Line 2 ~23 min to Hauptbahnhof; line 10 ~15 min to the centre (Mon–Sat). 2026 Kernzone advance single €2.50 / 24h €5.20.
Buy at the stop machine, Salzburg Verkehr channels, or Trafik before boarding — Obus lines generally will not sell the cheaper on-board reduced tickets. Salzburg Card covers city buses including the airport lines when valid. Taxi is fine with ski bags; centre often ~€15–25 metered.
Frequent daytime trolleybuses and a short 3 km city hop.
No rail; must pre-buy tickets; line 10 skips Sundays.
Airside T1 near Gate 10; walk-up €45 or Priority Pass / listed airline Business when space allows.
Posted airport hours end 19:00 Mon/Sat/Sun and 20:00/21:00 midweek. ~25 seats, snacks, soft drinks, standard alcohol, Wi-Fi, two desks — no showers. Priority Pass may show “until last flight”; trust the airport hours when they disagree. After close there is no lounge product.
Quiet snacks and drinks when ski-Saturday gates are packed.
Tiny room fills fast; useless after posted evening close.
Airport carry-on page: ≤100 ml containers in one 1-litre bag; large electronics out. No cheap public Fast Track.
Winter UK/DE ski-charter banks can stretch the security hall even though walks are short. Empty bottles refill from washroom taps after screening. Premium meet-and-assist is not a substitute for a budget Fast Track lane — there isn’t one published.
Short walks once you clear the checkpoint.
Peak compression; no CT leave-in-bag liquids waiver published.
Terminal 1 is year-round; Terminal 2 opens for peaks with extra desks/gates and ski-bag check-in. No jet bridges.
Apron walks and bus boarding are normal. Re-check FIDS for Schengen vs non-Schengen after the commercial zone. Meet landside after reclaim in T1. Do not confuse The Wolfgang restaurant with lounge access.
Impossible to get lost for long on this compact campus.
Remote/bus stands in snow still slow boarding.
LOWS runway 15/33 is 2,750 m concrete at ~430 m elevation — more capable than Innsbruck, still weather-exposed.
Wind, low cloud, and winter de-icing cancel or delay more than flatland peers. Keep flexible ski-week connections. Terminal renewal (€105 million through 2033, start targeted 2027) will eventually join the 1966 and 2005 buildings — expect construction phases later this decade.
Stunning approaches toward the Untersberg when it is clear.
Single runway + alpine fringe = one weather problem stops everything.
Airside washrooms after security in Terminal 1 (and T2 when that building is open); confirm live signage
No dedicated public drinking-fountain map is published. Austrian municipal tap water is potable — refill an empty bottle from washroom mixer taps after the classic 100 ml checkpoint. Baby-care / accessible taps are usually the easiest bottle fit.
Landside café shelves before security and airside café / duty-free counters in the departure lounge
Sealed bottles at landside and airside cafés, kiosks, and duty-free if you want a guaranteed aircraft bottle. Classic 100 ml rules apply at security — buy airside or refill after screening.
