Madurai Airport (IATA IXM / ICAO VOMD), also branded Madurai International Airport after the Union Cabinet’s 10 March 2026 international-airport declaration, is Tamil Nadu’s fourth-busiest civil passenger gateway after Chennai (MAA), Coimbatore (CJB), and Tiruchirappalli (TRZ). The AAI campus sits at Avaniyapuram / Airport Road about 12 km south of the city centre (airline and Wikipedia directories). Owner/operator is the Airports Authority of India (AAI). There is no passenger rail or metro platform inside the terminal. Late nights default to prepaid / app cabs. TRZ and MAA remain the usual diversions / alternates when weather or Gulf cancellations constrain the single strip — those are separate airports, not airside hops.
