Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Compact 2010 hall — still budget one strip and Gulf-fragile banks

Short city hop and a compact hall help; one runway and thin Gulf flying still need buffers.

IXM's September 2010 terminal is easy to read, but it is a single-runway AAI station with IndiGo-heavy domestic banks and thin international flying: SriLankan to Colombo, IndiGo to Abu Dhabi (Mon/Wed/Fri since 14 Aug 2026) and a SpiceJet Dubai flight listed from 25 Oct 2026 but not yet confirmed. DigiYatra has not been launched here, so plan full CISF queues. Arrive about 2 hours early for domestic and 3 hours for international; there is no Priority Pass lounge to wait in.

Terminal

One 2010 integrated hall — cargo is the old shell, not a second campus

Single 2010 passenger hall; no PP soft lounge.

Screenshot IXM ≠ MAA ≠ CJB ≠ TRZ ≠ IXZ before the car leaves Madurai / Dindigul / Virudhunagar / Theni. All scheduled passengers clear the 12 Sep 2010 integrated terminal (~17,560–17,600 m²). Old-terminal cargo blogs, “new international hall” CGI, and runway-extension land-acquisition press are not today’s check-in map. Live Priority Pass directory = no Madurai soft pin.

Food

Landside sealed water is Plan A — there is no PP soft room

No live PP soft room; landside bottles beat airside pricing.

Buy sealed water and snacks landside before CISF; airside café markup is the usual Indian-airport tax. Live Priority Pass India index has no named Madurai soft lounge — ignore Primus / Plaza Premium / Travel Club / Airr inventions from aggregator mirrors. VIP / CIP rooms are not a Priority Pass pour.

Access

Prepaid taxi Plan A — Avaniyapuram is ~12 km south, no terminal metro

Road hop into Madurai; metro is not at the kerb.

Use official prepaid taxi counters in arrivals or signed Ola / Uber pickup for the run into Meenakshi / Periyar / Junction (often ~25–45 minutes; confirm the board / app quote). Madurai Junction and Mattuthavani bus stand are separate road transfers. Do not invent an in-terminal metro or rail platform from city transit planning coverage.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Domestic trips to/from Madurai / southern Tamil Nadu with a short prepaid taxi hop
Temple-circuit and pilgrimage travellers road-transferring to Meenakshi, Rameswaram, or Kodaikanal
Travellers who prefer the local AAI field over connecting exclusively via Chennai
Travellers who do not need Priority Pass soft-lounge access

Watch out for

Screenshot IXM ≠ MAA ≠ CJB ≠ TRZ ≠ IXZ — wrong Tamil Nadu IATA is a multi-hour road day
Priority Pass's Madurai page lists no experiences: there is no PP lounge
DigiYatra not confirmed live here on mid-2026 ~38–39 airport national counts — plan full CISF queues
International-airport Cabinet label (10 Mar 2026) ≠ proof every Gulf nonstop is flying — trust the ticket/FIDS
Single 2,285 m runway 09/27 — monsoon / IndiGo / Gulf shocks can stack delays

Guide quick facts

From the editorial guide for IXM.

Updated Oct 22, 2026

Madurai Airport (IATA IXM / ICAO VOMD), also branded Madurai International Airport after the Union Cabinet’s 10 March 2026 international-airport declaration, is Tamil Nadu’s fourth-busiest civil passenger gateway after Chennai (MAA), Coimbatore (CJB), and Tiruchirappalli (TRZ). The AAI campus sits at Avaniyapuram / Airport Road about 12 km south of the city centre (airline and Wikipedia directories). Owner/operator is the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Official passenger page pattern: https://www.aai.aero/en/airports/madurai. Screenshot IXM (VOMD) ≠ MAA (Chennai) ≠ CJB (Coimbatore) ≠ TRZ (Tiruchirappalli) ≠ IXZ (Thoothukudi) — the wrong Tamil Nadu IATA is a multi-hour road day, not an airside hop. This is a pure AAI public civil field (WWII RAF history only) — not a passenger enclave on an active naval or air-force base.
One integrated passenger terminal (inaugurated 12 September 2010; public AAI / Hindu / New Indian Express summaries ~17,560–17,600 m²; design peak about 500 passengers per hour / about 1,230 simultaneous passengers including ~314 international seats on March 2026 director remarks; 36 check-in counters, immigration desks, and four baggage belts on facility summaries) handles all scheduled domestic and limited international flows. The older passenger shell was recommissioned as cargo (opened for cargo ops 15 December 2017 after a 28 November 2017 refurbish wrap) — not today’s check-in map. Treat “new international-only hall,” runway-to-3,800 m CGI, and land-acquisition press as planning context — not a second live passenger campus.
Traffic (AAI annexes for FY 2025–26 / 1 Apr 2025–31 Mar 2026, as compiled on Wikipedia from archived Mar2k26 Annex II–IV PDFs and mirrored by airport director P. Muthu Kumar’s June 2026 press briefings): 1,388,062 passengers (−0.8% / about 10,000 below FY 2024–25’s ~1.398M), 13,105 aircraft movements (−3% / down from 13,820–13,824), and 4,444.4 t cargo (+27.2%). Prefer AAI annex PDFs when auditing. Director remarks tied the soft passenger / movement dip to Gulf-route disruption and IndiGo operational shocks — always trust the ticket and FIDS over a brochure map.
Airfield (AAI eAIP / Wikipedia technical summaries for VOMD): single runway 09/27 — 2,285 m × 45 m asphalt; Cat-I ILS; aerodrome elevation about 136 m / 446 ft; seven parking bays including two jet-bridge stands on Wikipedia / older AAI facility notes (March 2026 local press also cites 12 parking bays — confirm the live apron chart). Round-the-clock ops since 1 October 2024 on New Indian Express director remarks. DigiYatra is not treated as confirmed live here — mid-2026 MoCA / DigiYatra wraps cite ~38–39 live airports, and AAI tender titles that merely list Madurai are not a go-live notice. Plan for full CISF document queues unless the live DigiYatra app and terminal signage both show IXM as active on your travel day.
Lounges (Priority Pass, checked 22 Oct 2026): Priority Pass now has a Madurai International Airport (IXM) page, but it says "No experiences are currently available at this airport", so there is no Priority Pass lounge. Do not invent Primus / Plaza Premium / Travel Club / Airr / Encalm pins from aggregator or stale card-programme listings. On-airport VIP (AAI) and CIP (Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry) rooms are invite / programme rooms, not Priority Pass.
Ground: prepaid taxi / signed app cabs remain Plan A for the ~12 km Avaniyapuram run into Meenakshi Temple / Periyar / Madurai Junction (often ~25–45 minutes in normal traffic; confirm the board / app quote). There is no passenger rail or metro platform inside the terminal. Late nights default to prepaid / app cabs. TRZ and MAA remain the usual diversions / alternates when weather or Gulf cancellations constrain the single strip — those are separate airports, not airside hops.
