HER · Greece’s #2 airport by passengers: a compact coastal leisure gateway that is easy to navigate but chronically overcrowded in July–August, with seasonal Priority Pass lounges and simple bus/taxi links into Heraklion — not a Fraport Greece field, and due to be replaced by Kasteli.
CHQ · A single Fraport Greece terminal for western Crete: 4.15 million passengers in 2025, a €2.70 KTEL bus, and no published lounge. Summer non-Schengen departures are the stressful part; winter international flying almost disappears. Fraport does not publish an on-time rate, so none is shown.

Summer HER is a capacity problem, not a navigation problem
In Jul–Aug arrive 2.5–3 hours before departure; winter/shoulder 2 hours usually clears check-in and security.
One campus — Schengen vs non-Schengen decides your airside life
Single terminal, but lounge and F&B access depend on whether your flight is Schengen or non-Schengen — check the screen, not memory.
Eat a real meal in town if the schedule allows
Acceptable café/snack fuel only; do not plan a leisurely airside dinner in August.

Treat July and August as a different airport
July 2025 alone was 748,953 passengers; December 2025 was 71,699, almost all domestic.
Clear security, then pick the right hall
Schengen and non-Schengen departures split after security. CREAT, Gregory's and Labyrinth Flavors are labeled accessible to all passengers; Refill is non-Schengen only.
Fill a bottle before security
Fraport Greece has listed public water coolers landside, including one before security. Travelers repeatedly report no fountain once you are airside.
