Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Disruption

Nightly runway closures through Dec 2026

VIPA: runway closed 22:00–05:00 AST nightly from 01 Dec 2025 through 31 Dec 2026 for pavement work/resurfacing.

Daytime banks continue; overnight ops constrained — check airline schedules.

USVI sequence

CBP (and USDA) before TSA on many mainland/PR departures

USVI sits outside the U.S. customs territory for many itineraries — expect federal inspection before security.

Airlines (e.g. AA) publish 180-minute check-in guidance. No invented queue minutes.

Lounge myth

No members’ lounge — ignore “VIP Lounge STT” claims

VIPA/AA: no Admirals/Sky Club/United Club; Priority Pass not indexed. Port Authority “Domestic Passenger Lounge” = general waiting area.

Plan cafés/bars airside instead.

Alt

Airside bars/cafés double as the wait zone

No lounge means F&B seating is the primary comfort product.

Free Wi-Fi throughout per secondary terminal guide.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Leisure travelers to Charlotte Amalie / St. Thomas resorts
Self-drive visitors using VIPA parking or on-airport rentals
TSA PreCheck holders when the lane is open

Watch out for

No Priority Pass or airline lounge
Nightly runway closure 22:00–05:00 AST through 31 Dec 2026
CBP/USDA before TSA on many mainland/PR departures — use airline buffers; no invented minutes
Parking does not accept Amex/Capital One/Discover
“Domestic Passenger Lounge” is not a members’ lounge
REAL ID / acceptable ID rules for territorial flights

The markdown guide's highest-signal tactics before the data-backed tips below.

From Best Airport Tricks & Hacks

Arrive with airline-published buffers (AA cites 180 minutes check-in) because of the dual federal queues — do not invent minutes.
TSA PreCheck: listed available; do not assume a dedicated lane is always open.
Bring REAL ID-compliant ID or passport for U.S. territorial flights as required by TSA rules.
Official taxis: dome light + TP plates; confirm VI Taxi Cab Commission rates.

01

statusTraveler Tips & Hacks

Check schedules against nightly runway closures

Reliability score reflects ongoing night work.

VIPA: runway closed 22:00–05:00 AST 01 Dec 2025–31 Dec 2026 for pavement boring/resurfacing.

Pro

Clear VIPA disruption notice.

Watch-out

Overnight flights constrained through Dec 2026.

02

timingTraveler Tips & Hacks

Plan CBP then TSA — not a mainland-only flow

Ease-of-use is the soft spot vs pure domestic U.S. airports.

USVI outbound to mainland/PR typically clears CBP (and USDA) before TSA. AA publishes 180-minute check-in guidance.

Pro

Airline early-arrival guidance exists.

Watch-out

Do not invent queue minutes.

03

TransportTraveler Tips & Hacks

Use official parking tariff and TP taxis

Ground access is a relative strength.

VIPA parking max $20/day; Amex/Capital One/Discover not accepted. Official taxis: dome light + TP plates.

Pro

Published parking and TP-plate taxi rules.

Watch-out

Some cards refused at parking.
