Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Two hours is plenty here

Two hours before departure; extra time on non-Schengen flights.

The airport asks you to arrive at least 2 hours before international flights. The 2023 expansion added more check-in desks and security lanes, and the terminal is open 24/7. Non-Schengen flights such as London Luton also go through passport control and the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), so allow extra time for those.

Terminal

One terminal, two departure zones

Single terminal; London Luton flights go through passport control.

Every flight uses the single terminal. Schengen flights (Vienna, Germany, Italy, Spain) board from the Schengen area. London Luton and other non-Schengen flights go through passport control first. All public facilities are on the ground floor.

Food

Snacks rather than restaurants

Relay, coffee and vending; no sit-down restaurant.

Lagardère Travel Retail runs the terminal's convenience and coffee outlets (Relay, So!Coffee, Hub Convenience), plus duty-free shops and vending machines. There are no full-service restaurants, so eat in town before an evening flight.

Status

The Business Lounge takes Priority Pass

Priority Pass lounge airside; other access per the airport's page.

A new Business Lounge of about 250 m² opened in the expanded terminal on 12 August 2026, run with Lagardère Travel Retail. Priority Pass lists it as being after security and passport control, and Priority Pass members get in. The airport also lists LoungeKey and paid entry; check the airport's lounge page for current terms.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Quick, short-walk departures from central Transylvania
Wizz Air flights to Germany, London Luton, Madrid and Rome
One-stop worldwide connections via Austrian Airlines in Vienna
Reaching the city cheaply by Tursib bus

Watch out for

Fewer routes since spring 2026: Lufthansa Munich suspended until at least the end of winter 2026/27, and several Wizz Air routes dropped
Food is mainly snacks and coffee; there is no sit-down restaurant
Non-Schengen flights (London Luton) go through passport control and EES registration
The 2-litre liquids rule applies at Sibiu only; your return airport may limit you to 100 ml

Guide quick facts

From the editorial guide for SBZ.

Updated Oct 23, 2026

Sibiu International Airport (IATA SBZ, ICAO LRSB) is about 3 km west of Sibiu in central Transylvania and is run by Sibiu County Council. It is a gateway to Sibiu's old town, the Făgăraș Mountains and the Saxon villages.
Traffic: 694,805 passengers in 2025, up 21% on 2024 (573,918), according to the airport and the Romanian national news agency AGERPRES. Commercial traffic rose 24% in January–June 2026 to 322,676. However, airlines have cut seats since April, and the airport expects only about 600,000 passengers for the whole of 2026.
All scheduled flights are international; there are no domestic routes. Wizz Air (base since 2016) is the main airline. Its winter 2026/27 network covers London Luton, Dortmund, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Memmingen, Nuremberg, Madrid and Rome Fiumicino.
Austrian Airlines (Star Alliance) is the only network carrier. It flies to Vienna daily on an A320, giving you one-stop connections worldwide. Lufthansa's Munich route has been suspended since April 2026 and will not return before the end of the winter 2026/27 schedule.
One terminal handles all flights, with separate Schengen and non-Schengen areas. It was enlarged almost fourfold in 2023 to about 22,400 m², sized for up to 2.5 million passengers a year.
Security runs C3 explosive-detection scanners, so at Sibiu you may carry liquids in containers of up to 2 litres in your hand luggage (since 5 September 2025).

Editorial guide tricks

The markdown guide's highest-signal tactics before the data-backed tips below.

From Best Airport Tricks & Hacks

Take the city bus: Tursib line 11 links the "Aeroport Terminal" stop outside arrivals with Piața Unirii in central Sibiu. Lines 112, 116, 117 and 118 also serve the airport. A 60-minute city ticket costs 3.5 lei. You can tap a contactless card on board or buy in the SibiuBus app.
Bolt has an airport pickup page for SBZ and works in Sibiu, which is useful late at night.
Connecting to long-haul? Book through Vienna on Austrian Airlines (Star Alliance) on a single ticket. Sibiu–Munich will not return before the end of the winter 2026/27 schedule.
Free Wi-Fi runs 24/7: connect to "Sibiu Airport Free WiFi" and accept the terms.
If you need assistance, book it with your airline at least 48 hours before you fly. The information desk is the meeting point for reduced-mobility passengers.
The terminal has ATMs in the public area and a baby-care room.

01

SecurityTraveler Tips & Hacks

Pack liquids for the stricter airport

Sibiu allows 2-litre liquid containers in hand luggage, but many airports still enforce 100 ml.

Since 5 September 2025 Sibiu's C3 scanners on all lanes have allowed liquids, aerosols and gels in containers up to 2 litres. If your return airport hasn't lifted the 100 ml limit, larger bottles will be confiscated on the way back.

Pro

No liquids bag needed when leaving Sibiu

Watch-out

The rule doesn't travel with you

02

TransportTraveler Tips & Hacks

Take line 11 into the centre

Tursib buses stop right outside arrivals and line 11 runs via Piața Unirii.

Lines 11, 112, 116, 117 and 118 serve the 'Aeroport Terminal' stop. A 60-minute city ticket costs 3.5 lei; tap a contactless card on board or use the SibiuBus app. The ride to the centre is about 15–20 minutes (estimate).

Pro

Very cheap and on the doorstep

Watch-out

Less frequent late at night

03

TransportTraveler Tips & Hacks

Use Bolt or the taxi rank late at night

Bolt serves SBZ, and metered taxis wait outside arrivals.

The information desk can order a taxi for you. Sibiu City Council sets a maximum per-km taxi fare, so insist on the meter and a receipt. Allow about 10–15 minutes to the old town (estimate).

Pro

Door to door

Watch-out

Fewer cars after the last flights

04

LoungeTraveler Tips & Hacks

Bring Priority Pass for the new lounge

The Business Lounge opened in August 2026 and accepts Priority Pass.

Priority Pass lists the lounge (as Horizons Lounge) after security and passport control on the ground floor, with a 4-hour maximum stay and free entry for children under 7. The airport also mentions LoungeKey and paid walk-in entry; check its lounge page for current terms.

Pro

Quiet space with drinks and snacks

Watch-out

Small, with flight-dependent hours

05

LayoverTraveler Tips & Hacks

Route long-haul trips via Vienna

Austrian Airlines flies Sibiu–Vienna daily and is the only Star Alliance link.

Lufthansa suspended Sibiu–Munich in April 2026 and says it won't return before the end of the winter 2026/27 schedule. Austrian moved to daily flights on A320s in May 2026, so Vienna is the main one-stop hub.

Pro

One ticket, protected connection

Watch-out

Only one flight a day
