Mitiga International Airport (IATA MJI, ICAO HLLM) is the only airport in Tripoli that handles scheduled passenger flights. It lies on the Mediterranean coast about 8 km east of the city centre (Turkish Airlines, Wikipedia), at an elevation of 36 ft. Local time is Africa/Tripoli (UTC+2). It is run by the Libyan Airports Authority under the Ministry of Transport. Facts checked 6 November 2026.
Tripoli International Airport (TIP), 34 km south of the city, has been closed to passenger traffic since the 2014 fighting. The Airports Authority lists a committee on its readiness and operation (24 September 2026), but no reopening date is published. Wikipedia and Airport Expert also describe Mitiga as a joint civil and military site (a former air base); passenger operations are civil.
Traffic: the airport does not publish a passenger total. The Airports Authority reports 3.2 million passengers and 40,706 flights across all 20 Libyan airports in 2023, and its 2021 report shows Mitiga as the busiest Libyan airport (its tables show 23,988 and 14,507 flights for Mitiga). The authorities describe the terminal as sized for about 3 million passengers a year.
