Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Show up 2 hours early — one funnel, classic liquids rules

Plan ~2 hours; classic 100 ml liquids and laptop-out screening still apply — midday Schengen hops can be lighter.

The terminal is compact, but check-in islands and the five security lanes still stack when Turkish, Lufthansa Group and leisure banks overlap. Airport messaging and EU practice still mean ≤100 ml liquids in a 1 L clear bag and laptops out — budget more time than a CT-liquids airport. Intra-Schengen travellers can often manage closer to 90 minutes off-peak; non-Schengen and morning banks need the full two hours. Reconfirm gate and boarding method on the airport boards; bus-gate walks are short but last-minute pier moves happen.

Terminal

One hall — Schengen vs non-Schengen after security

Single terminal complex; lounge is airside opposite Gate 1 — confirm Schengen vs non-Schengen before you sit.

Landside check-in and bag-drop feed a single security filter in the expanded west wing (opened July 2021). After screening, follow Schengen or non-Schengen signs before you settle in a café. The Business Lounge sits airside on the first floor opposite Gate 1 and the Marketplace — Priority Pass / LoungeKey / DragonPass holders may enter when space allows (airport: up to ~2 hours before departure for those cards). Gates are a short walk; jet bridges and bus gates both operate. The older landside hall is still part of the same building — do not look for a separate “T2”.

Food

Marketplace airside or the Business Lounge — landside still wins a real meal

Airside Marketplace covers a short wait; lounge buffet helps cardholders; serious food is still in the city.

The 2021 extension added duty-free and renovated F&B / Marketplace areas airside, but LJU remains a ~1.6M-passenger field — expect cafés, bakery and casual plates rather than a hub food court. The Business Lounge (~390 m² indoor/outdoor with Alps-facing terrace, up to ~60 guests) serves a self-service snack and drinks buffet for eligible business-class and lounge-card guests. For a proper Slovenian meal, eat in Ljubljana or Kranj before you arrive. Free terminal Wi-Fi covers maps and boarding passes; download offline maps before you leave coverage.

Status

2025 hit ~1.59M passengers — summer banks and works notices matter

Confirm live ops and Arriva times; 2025 traffic was 1.59M and summer peaks are real.

Fraport Slovenija reported 1,591,443 passengers in 2025 (+10.6%), still shy of the 2018 peak (~1.81M) but firmly into recovery. Summer months above 180,000 passengers stretch security and Arriva bus queues. Airline capacity into 2026 includes extra KLM/Swiss banks, Iberia Madrid season, Vueling Barcelona, Pegasus Istanbul Sabiha and easyJet Edinburgh — check live schedules. Always re-read the airport news/transport pages the day before travel; IJPP fares and bus times change faster than blogs.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Schengen hops on Lufthansa Group, Swiss, KLM, Air France and Turkish
Priority Pass holders aiming for the Gate 1 Business Lounge
Budget city transfers on the Arriva public bus
Alpine / lake trips continuing to Kranj, Bled or Bohinj

Watch out for

Classic ≤100 ml liquids and laptop-out screening — not CT leave-in-bag

Business Lounge caps ~60 guests; Priority Pass can be paused at peaks
Do not confuse LJU with Maribor (MBX) or Portorož (POW)

Near Zgornji Brnik / Brnik, about 24 km northwest of central Ljubljana and ~9.5 km east of Kranj; IATA LJU / ICAO LJLJ. Single passenger terminal complex (2021 west extension integrated with the older hall). One paved runway 12/30, 3,300 × 60 m asphalt with ILS Cat IIIb on runway 30; field elevation about 388 m / 1,273 ft. Operator: Fraport Slovenija d.o.o. (100% Fraport AG). Official site: lju-airport.si.
Calendar 2025: 1,591,443 passengers (+10.6% vs 2024) per Fraport Slovenija / Wikipedia traffic table sourced to Fraport; 24,665 aircraft movements (−3.1%). SURS air-goods traffic for Slovenia 2025 is 11,836 t (−5% vs 12.4k t in 2024), almost all through LJU; Fraport’s broader “total cargo” series is 27,186 t. July and August each exceeded 180,000 passengers; December was 101,803 (+18.7% YoY). Slovenia’s national statistics office reports ~1.6M passengers across LJU + Maribor + Portorož for 2025, with the vast majority through LJU and ~91% on scheduled flights.
No passenger rail at the airport. Arriva public buses link Brnik with Ljubljana’s main bus/train station, plus routes toward Kranj and Bled. Buy on board (cash or card — Visa/Mastercard/Diners on the airport route per Arriva) or at the airport bus-stop ticket machine (cash/card; IJPP chip card option for combined bus/rail onward travel). Independent 2026 local guides consistently quote about €4.10 one-way to Ljubljana station — confirm the live IJPP band on the machine or with the driver (IJPP single fares were raised nationwide on 1 Aug 2025). Slomet / pelji.se apps show live departures for stop “Brnik / Airport Ljubljana”.
Network carriers dominate capacity: Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Lufthansa (Frankfurt/Munich), Swiss (Zurich), Air Serbia (Belgrade), Brussels Airlines, Air France, British Airways, KLM (daily Amsterdam since March 2025), plus leisure/LCC names such as easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling, flydubai and seasonal charters. Top 2024 O&D corridors on Wikipedia’s Fraport-derived table were Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich, Belgrade and London Gatwick.
Classic EU cabin-liquid rules still apply on the airport security page: containers ≤100 ml inside one clear resealable ≤1 L bag; laptops out of bags. Free ziplock bags at check-in desks. Slovenia is Schengen and in the eurozone — no passport control on intra-Schengen flights. Business Lounge airside on the 1st floor opposite Gate 1 / Marketplace: airport lists daily 05:00–21:00 (may flex with the schedule); Priority Pass currently lists 05:00–20:00 and a typical max stay of about 2 hours before departure for cardholders.
Terminal footprint after the July 2021 extension is about 28,587 m² with 22 check-in desks and five long security lanes; departures hourly capacity rose from ~500 to ~1,250 passengers. Free Wi-Fi is advertised through the terminal. Do not confuse LJU with Maribor (MBX) or Portorož (POW), or with the historic Polje airfield inside Ljubljana that this airport replaced in 1963–64.
