Rwanda’s capital gateway is a compact Kanombe hall 10 km from the city: visa on arrival is real, Uber is not, and Bugesera is still a construction site — budget four hours for RwandAir international.
An editorial 0–10 score. The overall is exactly the weighted sum of six traveler categories — not a Google rating and not a poll.

Most important tips
A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.
Be at Kanombe 4 hours before a RwandAir international flight. Desks close 90 minutes prior; online check-in does not skip the airport desk.
RwandAir FAQ: international 4 hours, domestic 3 hours. Desks close 90 minutes before international flights and 60 minutes before domestic. Online check-in still requires a desk visit before the counter closes (processing-times alert). The same alert tells every passenger to allow 4 hours — treat that as the international default, not leftover folklore.
Scheduled passengers use one two-storey hall in Kanombe. Do not plan on Bugesera, and do not treat leftover VIP/cargo buildings as extra doors.
RAC's live campus is the Kanombe passenger building. Wikipedia leftover "three terminals" is the old VIP building plus cargo, not three check-in halls. Bugesera remains a construction site (ops targeted mid-2028). Follow live Departures / Arrivals signs in the main hall.
Eat in the public halls or the duty-free zone. There is no published refill-fountain map and no RAC bottle tariff.
RAC: shops, bars and restaurants in the public halls and in the international duty-free zone, 24/7. eAIP only promises "restaurants at AD (snacks)". RAC does not publish drinking-fountain locations or a bottled water price. Buy a sealed bottle landside or airside; lounge drinks come with Pearl or Dream access.
Every nationality can visa on arrival at KGL. Carry a passport valid 6 months. Do not copy Entebbe's "yellow fever for everyone" rule.
Apply on Irembo before you fly or pay at KGL. V1 US$50 / US$70. EATV US$100. Commonwealth/AU/Francophonie 30 days fee-waived; EAC 6 months free. Yellow fever is required only when you arrive from a WHO transmission-risk country (NaTHNaC country 187 / FCDO). Direct from the UK or US: CDC says the vaccine is not an entry requirement.

4 ways into the city, compared on time, cost, and luggage.
2 lounges with access rules, hours, and verdicts. 1 rated worth it.
Peg the city as 10 km / about 20–30 minutes, not leftover 5 km. eAIP 278° from the city centre is the official distance.
6 rated amenities — food, Wi-Fi, quiet spots, family, and sleep.
Where to refill for free, and where a bottle costs the least airside.

Kigali International Airport and the Kigali city center
Compare prepaid private transfers to Kigali — useful overnight, with luggage, or when you want a locked-in fare before you land.
RAC-licensed taxis 24/7 outside the arrival gate. Sky-blue ATAK vans and VW MOVE. Agree the itinerary before you load bags.
Tip: RAC posts ATAK +250 783 853 933 and MOVE +250 788 568 527. There is no published city-centre fare — leftover US$15–30 quotes are aggregator folklore.
Local Kigali cab (and limited moto) app. Cash or Mobile Money. Uber is not in Rwanda; Bolt Kigali is a 404.
Tip: Yego says fares are distance-based with no surge. Moto supply is limited and a poor plan with hold luggage. Pin arrivals after you clear the vehicle checkpoint.
Kibaya–Kanombe Airport–Downtown. Daily Airport Pass 600 RWF; weekly 5,000; monthly 10,000.
Tip: Ordinary Daily Pass excludes Airport Express — buy the Airport pass. You need a Tap&Go smart card (AC Group). Fine with a backpack.
Parking is on site. RAC hosts the 2025 commercial-charges PDF (updated 2 Jul 2026) rather than an HTML tariff.
Tip: The PDF is scanned image-text — do not invent first-hour RWF. Read https://www.rac.co.rw/default-title/parking before you leave a car.
RwandAir Business and top-tier Dream Miles only. RAC: food, FIDS, child play area, Kimirinko/Remera view. Not Priority Pass.

RAC lists shops, bars and restaurants in the public halls and the international duty-free zone 24/7. No published water tariff.
RAC advertises Wi-Fi in Pearl and Dream. No published public-hall SSID — leftover waiting-area Wi-Fi is unverified.
eAIP health and sanitation H24; RAC Health 24/7. First aid at the aerodrome, hospitals in the city.
International duty-free zone plus public-hall shops, 24/7 on RAC's homepage. eAIP is more modest (snacks at the aerodrome).
Kibaya–Kanombe Airport–Downtown. Daily Airport Pass 600 RWF on a Tap&Go card. Ordinary Daily Pass excludes Airport Express.
RwandAir FAQ: 4 hours international / 3 hours domestic. Desks close 90 / 60 minutes. Online check-in still needs a desk visit.
The processing-times alert tells every passenger to allow 4 hours. Treat that as the international default. Empty bottles before screening — RAC does not publish fountains.
Compact single hall once you are inside.
Traveler reports add a landside vehicle checkpoint before the curb.
RAC-licensed taxis (sky-blue ATAK and VW MOVE) wait 24/7 outside arrivals. Uber is not Rwanda; Bolt Kigali 404s.
KBS Daily Airport Pass is 600 RWF on Tap&Go. City centre is eAIP 10 km / 278°, about 20–30 minutes. RAC does not publish a taxi fare table.
10 km is a short capital run compared with Entebbe.
No metro, no airport rail, no official Uber button.
Pearl: Priority Pass 4.2/509, LoungeKey code KGL, DragonPass A20218, 24/7, max 4 hours. Dream: WB Business and Dream Miles Gold/Diamond.
PP and LoungeKey currently suspend hot food and charge for wine. Showers are not on the Pearl PP list. Dream showers are traveler-reported, not an RAC line.
24/7 Pearl is useful on overnight WB connections.
No published RAC walk-in tariff — do not invent one.
Scheduled passengers use the main two-storey hall. Leftover three-terminal maps are the old VIP building plus cargo.
Rwanda’s infrastructure minister has said Bugesera aims to finish in 2027 and start operations mid-2028. Fly KGL/HRYR until then. ICAO HRYR is not a public slug.
English signs; compact walk from check-in to Pearl after Duty Free.
One runway, 10 take-off / 28 landing except ATC.
Landside public halls of the main passenger terminal — RAC 24/7 bars and restaurants (no named fountain map)
RAC lists bars and restaurants in the public halls 24/7 and does not publish drinking-fountain locations or a bottled-water price. Buy a sealed bottle before security.
Airside international duty-free zone after passport control — RAC 24/7 shops and restaurants
RAC lists shops, bars and restaurants in the international duty-free zone 24/7. Sealed water after security; still no published tariff.
Pearl Lounge, airside after the Duty Free shops in the passenger terminal
Priority Pass lists soft beverages; wine and spirits are extra and hot food is temporarily suspended. Complimentary once you are in the room.
