Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Saturday closed — and Valan’s terrain weather owns the clock

Tiny terminal; Saturday closed, Sunday opens late, and Arctic STOL weather on ~880 m 08/26 are the real planning constraints.

HVG is a one-terminal short-field airport, so walking times inside are short. The schedule risks are (1) Avinor’s published **Saturday closed** terminal window, (2) the Sunday late-open (**16:45**), and (3) Finnmark coastal / terrain weather on an **~880 × 30 m** asphalt runway (**08/26**) with a constrained approach. Overnight stays inside are not part of the published operating pattern — match arrivals to contact-page hours.

Terminal

One compact Valan passenger building — no second terminal myth

Single passenger terminal; no named airside shop on the current Avinor directory; walking distances are short.

Check-in, security, and the departure hold sit in a single Avinor passenger terminal at Valan north of Honningsvåg (English Wikipedia: terminal capacity notes describe a small regional hall). There is no multi-pier campus and no airside train. Re-check screens when wind, low cloud, or snow slows the short runway.

Food

No named Avinor shop — eat in Honningsvåg or on the aircraft

Avinor’s shopping page lists no café or kiosk; treat F&B as unreliable and plan town or onboard meals.

Official Avinor Shopping and food directory for Honningsvåg is empty of named outlets on the research day — no Narvesen, Point, Tax Free, or café title is published. Assume you may find nothing open after security and eat in Honningsvåg centre or accept airline catering. Confirm on the day rather than trusting third-party “airport restaurant” blogs.

Status

No lounge — taxi or rental for the ~4 km town hop

Zero lounges; free OnePark parking; taxi or Nordkapp Car Service rental is the practical default into town.

There is no Priority Pass / LoungeKey / walk-up passenger lounge on current Avinor Honningsvåg shopping pages. For town (~**4–4.5 km** by road from Valan to Honningsvåg centre), plan **taxi** or the Avinor-listed **Nordkapp Car Service AS** meet-and-greet (**78 47 60 60**). Entur stop **Honningsvåg lufthavn** (**NSR:StopPlace:733**) exists — verify live before you skip the taxi rank. Parking on the Avinor parking page is **free**; OnePark customer service is **64 81 19 80**. There is no rail link.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Nordkapp / Honningsvåg trips on Widerøe Dash 8 PSO links
Travelers who want zero terminal complexity and will eat in town
Self-drive visitors using free on-site parking or Nordkapp Car Service meet-and-greet

Watch out for

No passenger lounge — Priority Pass / LoungeKey will not help here
Avinor’s shopping page lists no named café or kiosk — do not plan an airside meal
~880 m STOL runway (08/26) with constrained terrain approaches — Finnmark weather regularly delays Tromsø / Finnmark connections
Saturday terminal closed and Sunday opens only 16:45 on Avinor’s contact page — do not plan a Saturday landside wait

Honningsvåg Airport, Valan (Norwegian Honningsvåg lufthavn, Valan; Northern Sámi Ávanuorri), IATA **HVG** / ICAO **ENHV**, serves Honningsvåg and the Nordkapp / North Cape tourism axis on Magerøya in Finnmark, Norway. Visiting address on Avinor’s English contact page: **Honningsvåg Airport, 9751 Honningsvåg**; postal **Avinor, Honningsvåg Airport, P.O. Box 150, 2061 Gardermoen**. Official English hub: avinor.no/en/airport/honningsvag/. Do not confuse it with Hammerfest (**HFT**), Mehamn (**MEH**), Hasvik (**HAA**), Alta (**ALF**), or Lakselv Banak (**LKL** — joint civil/military; not this guide’s subject).
Operator: **Avinor**. Official passengers-2025.xlsx (scheduled + non-scheduled roll-up including transfer/transit, column S): **19,613** passengers in **2025** (**+8.0%** vs about **18,166** implied by the published YoY change vs **2024**). Terminal passengers (column N): **10,758**. Fully civilian Avinor regional STOL field — not a closed military airbase. Opened **30 June 1977** (English / Norwegian Wikipedia history).
One asphalt runway **08/26**, about **880 × 30 m / 2,887 × 98 ft** (English Wikipedia citing AIP; OurAirports runway row **2,887 × 98 ft** ASP). Field elevation about **14 m / 46 ft** MSL (Wikipedia AIP note; OurAirports airport elev **44 ft / 13 m**). Approach geometry is constrained by surrounding terrain — treat weather and crosswind as first-class schedule risk, not a footnote.
No rail at the curb. Entur registers stop **Honningsvåg lufthavn** (**NSR:StopPlace:733** / **NSR:Quay:1187**) at the airport. Road distance into Honningsvåg centre is about **4–4.5 km** (English Wikipedia). Taxi or a pre-booked rental is the practical default when Entur shows no useful bus for your bank.
Security follows classic Avinor/Norwegian cabin liquids: containers in a clear resealable **≤1 L** bag (Avinor security page). Fast Track on that page is an **Oslo**-only product — do not expect OSL-style priority lanes at HVG. Free Wi‑Fi SSID **AIRPORT** (~**4 hours** after captive-portal accept, same Avinor Wi‑Fi product page as other Avinor fields). No passenger lounge is listed on Avinor’s Honningsvåg shopping page.
Official shopping directory: Avinor’s Honningsvåg Shopping and food page currently lists **no named café, kiosk, or Tax Free shop**. Treat airside retail as absent and confirm on the day. Hub airline on Avinor’s airline strip at research time is **Widerøe** only — Finnmark / North Norway PSO-style links; confirm live. Published terminal hours (contact page): weekdays **05:30–23:30**, **Saturday closed**, Sunday **16:45–23:30**. Car hire on the Avinor page: **Nordkapp Car Service AS** (**78 47 60 60**). Parking is **free** on site; **OnePark** runs the product (customer service 24/7 on **64 81 19 80**). Widerøe Ground Handling is the published fixed-wing handler (**+47 41 70 66 40**).
