Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Transport

Buy Rhônexpress online — TCL is cheaper if you have time

Rhônexpress ~29 min / €16.30 online; TCL T3 + bus 248 needs a toutes-zones ticket at €3.70.

Rhônexpress runs Part-Dieu Villette ↔ Lyon–Saint-Exupéry TGV station in about 29 minutes (every 15 min daytime; every 30 min ~04:25–06:00 and 21:00–00:00). Live operator fares: online adult one-way €16.30 / return €28.50; machines €17.40 / €30.30; ages 12–25 €10.70 / €20.30; under-12 free. Onboard adds €4 on machine fares. Same-day TGV calling at Lyon St-Exupéry: train-connection one-way €10.50 online. Cheaper but slower: TCL tram T3 to Meyzieu ZI, then bus 248 (ex-47 since 31 Aug 2026) to Aéroport Saint-Exupéry Gare Routière — buy a TCL toutes-zones ticket at €3.70 because the airport sits in the zone externe (the airport page’s €2.10 quote is the city Zones 1–2 fare and does not cover the airport). Official taxi: Part-Dieu ~€67 day / ~€90 night (19:00–07:00 + Sundays / holidays).

Security

Book free ZenLine — still pack 100 ml

Free ZenLine slots help; assume classic liquid rules on the day.

Airport guidance: arrive with the usual airline buffer (typically 2–2.5 h Europe, ~3 h outside Europe). Book a free ZenLine security slot for Terminal 1 between 7 days and 4 hours before departure (valid 15 min either side of the slot), or buy Coupe-File priority at €9 (not valid for Israel). Lyon has not published a cabin-liquids waiver — pack ≤100 ml containers in one transparent 1 L bag and expect electronics out unless a lane sign says otherwise. Non-Schengen passport control is upstairs toward gates C/D; PARAFE e-gates speed eligible EU/EEA/CH biometrics when open.

Lounge

Match Confluence vs Mont Blanc to your destination

Paid airport lounges by Schengen/non-Schengen; PP is Alpage only.

Both airport lounges sit airside in Terminal 1 around Place des Lumières. Salon Confluence (Schengen; Place des Lumières near B05) opens from 04:15–04:30 and closes 19:00–21:00 depending on weekday. Salon Mont Blanc (non-Schengen; gate C level 1, after border police) opens 08:30 and closes 19:30–21:45. Live store prices: adult €34 / child 2–12 €16 (under-2 free; ticket valid 12 months); Coupe-File + lounge pack €40. Food, drinks including alcohol, unlimited Wi-Fi; showers temporarily unavailable. DragonPass lists both rooms on A10443 (Confluence = Schengen/domestic; Mont Blanc = non-Schengen). Priority Pass / LoungeKey at LYS is Alpage restaurant (food court, 05:00–21:00) — €23 bill credit per visit, not lounge entry.

Food

Refill after security — do not invent a bottle price

Official FAQ: drinking fountains in several places; toilet tap water is potable.

Airport customer-care FAQ (updated 24 Sep 2026): drinking fountains are available in several places, and toilet tap water is potable. With T2 closed, plan refills in Terminal 1 after security around Place des Lumières. For sealed bottles, buy landside before screening or airside at cafés such as Starbucks, Confluences Café, or Délices de Lyon — shelf prices are unpublished, so do not budget a made-up euro figure. Alpage (Priority Pass credit) sits in the T1 food court with tarmac/Alps views.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Rail+air connections via the Calatrava TGV station
Schengen business hops with a paid Confluence lounge
Alps ski transfers and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes leisure
Budget city access via TCL T3 + bus 248

Watch out for

Terminal 2 closed — all airlines and queues funnel through T1
Priority Pass is Alpage €23 restaurant credit, not lounge entry
Classic EU 100 ml liquids still apply (no published waiver)
Salon Mont Blanc opens 08:30 — early non-Schengen flights miss it
TCL airport rides need a toutes-zones €3.70 ticket, not the €2.10 city fare
