Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Summer KGS is a capacity problem sitting 30–35 minutes from town

In Jul–Aug arrive when check-in opens (often 2.5–3 hours before departure); winter/shoulder 2 hours is usually enough for domestics.

From late spring through early autumn, overlapping Aegean/Sky Express domestics, Jet2/easyJet/Ryanair/TUI/Condor/charter banks, and bag-drop desks pack landside hard. Online check-in and cabin-bag-only travel remove the worst queue. Same-day hotel check-ins in Kos Town are short by road (~30–35 minutes) — the delay is terminal processing, not the drive. Non-Schengen EES border checks add a second bottleneck the airport itself is warning about.

Terminal

One Fraport campus — and no Priority Pass lounge to hunt

Single Fraport Greece terminal; do not plan on a Priority Pass lounge — KGS is missing from PP’s Greece list and Shop & Dine has no CIP page.

After security, follow Schengen / Non-Schengen signage before you commit to food. There is no published Priority Pass CIP room at KGS (unlike RHO / HER / CFU / SKG). Airside calories live in the Shop & Dine set — Starbucks, Burger King, French Bakery, Il Maestro, and So Very Greek on Schengen-accessible listings; Pret A Manger, Negroni, and Pub in Non-Schengen; Aurora and Panopolis in all-users departures. Remote stands and bus gates are common in peak season.

Food

Named brands beat mystery snack bars — still not a destination meal

Starbucks, Burger King, Pret, So Very Greek, and duty free cover calories; eat a real meal in Kos Town or Kardamena when the schedule allows.

Airport Shop & Dine lists landside/all-users Aurora and Panopolis; Schengen- accessible Starbucks, Burger King, French Bakery, Il Maestro, and So Very Greek; Non-Schengen Pret A Manger, Negroni, and Pub; plus Hudson / Athens Protasis / Occhio Papavasiliou / Hellenic Duty Free retail. Hours track the flight programme — early winter mornings can be thin outside the first café to open. Peak banks mean long lines and picked-over displays.

Status

KTEL bus or Arrivals taxi — no station under the terminal

KTEL stop ~50 m from the terminal; taxi rank in front of Arrivals; pre-book resort transfers for Kardamena / Kefalos / late-charter nights.

Public bus is the budget path (KTEL to Kos Town, Mastichari, Kardamena, and Kefalos; stop ~50 m from the terminal; tickets from the driver; airport page points to ktel-kos.gr). Taxi stand is signed in front of Arrivals. Hotel and private transfers dominate late charters and south-/west-coast resorts. Free Wi-Fi SSID Fraport-Free — join and open a browser for the captive portal. Limited public parking opposite the terminal is free of charge per the airport parking page.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Summer leisure arrivals to Kos Town, Kardamena, Mastichari, and Kefalos resorts
Budget travellers using the KTEL bus stop ~50 m from the terminal
Cabin-bag-only LCC / charter passengers who can absorb classic 100 ml LAG rules
Self-drivers who want free short public parking opposite the terminal

Watch out for

Jul–Aug check-in/security and EES Extra-Schengen queues — not a ‘small island’ show-up time
No published Priority Pass / CIP passenger lounge (unlike RHO/HER/CFU/SKG)
No rail — late charters to Kardamena/Kefalos need a pre-booked transfer or taxi plan
Classic ≤100 ml LAG rules; no published CT liquids waiver
Do not mix up with RHO (Rhodes) — inter-island transfers are ferry/flight hops

Updated Sep 14, 2026

Kos International Airport “Ippokratis” (IATA KGS / ICAO LGKO) sits near Antimachia in the centre of Kos island, about 24 km from Kos Town on the provincial Kos–Kefalos road. Operator is Fraport Greece under the 40-year regional-airports concession (ops from 11 Apr 2017); official English site is kgs-airport.gr. Named for Hippocrates. Do not confuse it with Rhodes Diagoras (RHO) — the Dodecanese’s larger hub — or with Bodrum on the Turkish mainland across the water.
Airport YE tables (FG Traffic Data Management, preliminary): 3,176,063 passengers in 2025 (+3.5% vs 3,069,659 in 2024), with 349,422 domestic and 2,826,641 international; 23,698 flights (+3.6% vs 22,877). Jan–Jul 2026 already 1,585,747 passengers (−0.7% vs the same months of 2025). Traffic is violently seasonal — July–August leisure and charter banks dominate; December–February collapse to thin domestic-heavy months. Dodecanese #2 after Rhodes and routinely among Greece’s busier regional leisure fields.
Single passenger campus (Fraport-built new terminal ~24,000 m² with check-in desks expanded 16→28 and security lanes 4→9) with Schengen and Extra-Schengen / Non-Schengen airside splits after screening / passport control. Runway 14/32 about 2,400 m asphalt; field elevation about 125 m / 409 ft. Full commercial leisure gateway — not a closed military airbase. Expect remote stands and bus boarding in peak summer.
No rail on Kos. Default ground options are KTEL public buses (stop ~50 m from the terminal; tickets from the driver; airport page points to ktel-kos.gr), the official taxi stand in front of Arrivals, on-site rental cars (Avance / Avis Budget / Enterprise / Hertz Thrifty), and pre-booked resort transfers for Kardamena / Mastichari / Kefalos / Tigaki / Kos Town hotels.
Security follows standard Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority LAG rules (containers ≤100 ml in one transparent resealable ≤1 L bag; free bags at screening). The airport homepage currently flags longer Entry/Exit System (EES) waits at border control for non-Schengen arrivals and departures — arrive when check-in opens on UK and other Extra-Schengen banks.
No published Priority Pass / LoungeKey CIP passenger lounge at KGS. Priority Pass’s Greece directory lists ATH, CFU, HER, JMK, RHO, and SKG — not KGS. Official Shop & Dine lists cafés and duty free only — no CIP lounge page. Treat third-party “Filoxenia Lounge” blog mentions as unverified against the live airport and PP directories; plan on airside F&B (Starbucks / Burger King / Pret / So Very Greek and peers) instead.
