LEGOLAND peaks and Ryanair-era capacity hangover

Small terminal, but LEGOLAND/charter peaks and post-Ryanair schedule churn still punish tight connections — pad holiday mornings.

BLL is a compact single terminal, so absolute walking times stay short — the real schedule risk is summer LEGOLAND / charter banks and residual network rebuild after Ryanair’s March 2025 exit. Arrive earlier than the building size suggests on Danish school-holiday Saturdays. CT security is faster for liquids than classic 100 ml airports, but boarding-pass gates and bag-drop still queue. Build buffer if you must connect by bus to a Vejle train for Copenhagen same day.

Terminal

One building — landside check-in, airside upstairs retail, gates beyond

Single north-side terminal: security downstairs, duty-free and lounge up, then gates — short walks, not a multi-terminal maze.

Landside: check-in / bag drop and security on the main floor; arrivals / reclaim sit to the side of the same hall. After security you climb into the duty-free / F&B mezzanine, then continue to Schengen and non-Schengen gate hold areas. King Amlet Lounge is upstairs airside (right after cosmetics / WHSmith). Re-check FIDS — remote stands and bus-gate calls happen. Cargo and GA sit south of the runway and are irrelevant for airline passengers.

Food

Eat before security or use the lounge — airside choice is regional, not a food hall

Fine for coffee and a plate; lounge buffet beats scrambling the gate cafés on a packed Saturday.

Expect a Danish regional mix: cafés, a bar/restaurant level, duty-free snacks, and LEGO/retail rather than a full capital-city food court. If you have Priority Pass / LoungeKey / airline access, King Amlet Lounge’s buffet is the most predictable sit-down. LEGOLAND and Billund town are minutes away if you have a long landside gap — not a same-security-zone hop.

Status

Bus to Vejle for rail — there is no airport train

No rail at BLL — Sydtrafik 43/143 to Vejle (64 DKK adult published) is the default public move; cash or travel-card apps only on the bus.

Catch Sydtrafik 43/143 at the terminal curb to Vejle Trafikcenter for DSB trains toward Copenhagen / the rest of Denmark. Published adult single on the airport 6-zone product is 64 DKK (child 32 DKK); pay with Rejsekort / Rejsebillet app or cash (DKK or EUR notes) on board — no card/MobilePay on the bus. Midttrafik 912X is the Aarhus corridor. Taxi is fine for LEGOLAND / hotels (~3 km) but poor value vs bus for Vejle. Pre-book parking on parkering.bll.dk when you can; free shuttle links remote lots.

Billund Airport (Billund Lufthavn), IATA BLL / ICAO EKBI, sits about 1 NM northeast of Billund town in Mid/South Jutland — the closest commercial airport to LEGOLAND Billund (~3 km). Operator: Billund Lufthavn A/S. Official English hub: bll.dk/en/. Do not confuse with Copenhagen (CPH) or Aarhus (AAR); BLL is Denmark’s main West-Jutland passenger and cargo gateway, not a military field.
Official December 2025 traffic report: 3,058,981 passengers in calendar 2025 (−21.5% vs 3,898,523 in 2024) after Ryanair closed its Billund base at end-March 2025 over Denmark’s passenger tax. Cargo held near recent highs (December 2025 table: 81,348 tonnes air freight vs 89,589 t in 2024). CEO Jan Hessellund targets recovering ~800,000 of ~1.3M lost passengers in 2026 as Norwegian adds routes. Largest 2025 carriers cited: KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, Norwegian, Wizz Air, Air France; load factor just under 80%; more than one in three passengers business.
Single passenger terminal north of the runway (KHR/ARX-era ~40,000 m² building opened May 2002; later pier/extension works). One runway 09/27, 3,101 × 45 m asphalt (Danish AIP EKBI; elev ARP 246 ft / ~75 m). CAT III capable approaches — reliability is better than many regional fields, but it is still a single-runway airport.
No rail station. Primary public link is Sydtrafik bus 43 / 143 to Vejle Trafikcenter (~29–45 min depending on route; adult single for the published 6-zone airport product 64 DKK / child 32 DKK per Sydtrafik’s airport-bus page — Rejsekort/Rejsebillet app, or cash DKK/EUR notes on board; cards and MobilePay are not accepted on the bus). Midttrafik 912X continues Vejle–Horsens–Skanderborg–Aarhus; other Sydtrafik lines cover Esbjerg (144/944X), Kolding (166), Give–Tørring (119). Free parking-area shuttle to the terminal; free Billund town/LEGOLAND-area shuttle is seasonal — check the live airport bus page.
Security uses CT cabin-baggage scanners: the airport’s Danish baggage page states you may now take multiple liquid containers of up to 2 litres each through screening (still respect airline cabin-weight rules). Boarding-pass scan, coats/pockets in trays; baby food/medicine allowed. Analogue film can be damaged by CT — ask staff before the tunnel if you need hand inspection.
