Most important tips

Know before you go

A compact traveler cheat sheet for timing, terminals, food, and disruption checks.

Timing

Arrive 2 hours early year-round

Build in buffer for parking shuttles and occasional TSA surges that hit 1-2+ hours on peaks.

Summer tourism and oil-worker rotations (esp. Wed evenings into Thu) plus holiday weekends create the worst lines; PreCheck cuts it dramatically.

Terminal

Confirm South vs North before arrival

Most domestic flights use South Terminal Concourses A-B-C; North is mainly international arrivals/charters.

Free shuttle links them (on-demand from North); walking connector exists landside near Alaska baggage claim but is not airside.

Food

Hit Silver Gulch or Sushi on the Fly airside

Skip generic chains for local craft beer/pizza at Silver Gulch (Concourse C) or fresh sushi.

Norton Sound Seafood and Humpy’s-style options deliver real Alaskan flavors; McDonald’s/Starbucks cover early/late gaps.

Status

Check weather and cargo ops impact

Winter storms and heavy cargo traffic can cascade delays even if passenger side looks calm.

Monitor Alaska Airlines app and airport socials; North Terminal hours flex with international schedules.

Honest verdict

Who this airport works for

Best for

Alaska Airlines connections
Local seafood and craft beer
Quick downtown access
Cargo-curious plane spotting

Watch out for

TSA spikes on peak summer/holiday mornings
Limited lounge options outside Alaska status/day pass
Winter weather delays cascading from cargo ops
No airside carts in South Terminal
